Page numbers don't print

J

James Morse

Added automatic page numbers in a header, and they display in the
document fine, but when printed (or even in "Print preview") all I get
is "{page}" printed where the page number should be.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

James

In the Preferences dialog, under the Print tab, uncheck the box about field
codes.

There is no "Preferences" in any menu! There is no "File/Save" either!
And this is a clean install.

What version of Word are you using?

The Preferences dialog should be under the Word menu. If in WinWord, the
equivalent is Tools | Options.

What do you mean by "no File/Save"? Do you mean you don't have a File menu
in the main menu bar at the very top?

The support person may have been correct. The earliest version of Office Mac
that may work right in OS 9 is Office 98 (no longer available, so you'd have
to upgrade to Office 2001). So Far, I haven't tracked down official MS
compatibility, but I did find this:

http://computing.unr.edu/sa/mac/appsinstall.html

which says there are problems with Office 4.2.1 in OS 9:

" There appears to be compatibility issues with Microsoft Office 4.2.1 and
Mac OS 9. Some issues can be resolved by doing a clean install of Mac OS 9
and then reinstalling Office 4.2.1. If that doesn¹t resolve the issue, the
only choice is to upgrade to Office 98 or reinstall an older version of the
OS."

Here's a post that asked the same question (but got no answers, so it
doesn't look promising:
llapsed&sb=11&o=&fpart=1>

(Apparently it may not have even been 100% compatible with OS 8.6.)

You can still get upgrade prices for Office 2001...
