I can't move them. That's the issue, Elliott. They won't go beyond
that dotted rectangle, which doesn't reach to the margins.
Not sure what yuou mean by "rulers...can be set separately to the bottom
of the page." When I open the header, which is where I want the
numbers, there is a ruler at the top. Changes there have no effect on
the numbers, though.
I tried it before I posted and it works for me. More precisely:-
In the view menu, check 'header and footer' and 'ruler'.
The document window will change to page view with a ruler with various
blue decorations on the window frame. The ones you are interested in is
the downward pointing triangular one on the left or possibly the upward
pointing one on the right.
Let's suppose you want the page numbers in the top left corner (I won't
over-egg it with odd even pages where you'd probably use the left
margin for even pages and the right margin for odd pages)
Drag the ruler's left down triangle as far left as you want the number
to be. Drag the left vertical ruler's blue/white boundary up or down to
place the the number where you want it in relation to the top of the
page. Type ctrl-shift-p or find the stupid toolbar button icon thingy
to insert a page number field and press it. The page number will
appear. Adjust the placing to your taste. If you want to do fancy
formatting you will have to find its two little friends as well. The
three look like dog-eared pages with a tic-tac-toe game in progress, a
couple of plus signs and the tic-tac-toe with a grey splodge, which
might be a hand with a pointing finger
If the page number floats about in the centre of the page, that is
because you have it set to centred. A cmd-L with the insertion point on
the page number's line will quad it left pretty smartly.
Page number on the right is roughly similar, except you will need to
force the page number field over with a right justify. cmd-R
Right then, that ought to get you going.
