Page Numbers in MS Word 2007 document

B

Bill

I have a large document and wish to do the following but nowhere in the Help
section can I find a clear answer:

(1) I want to start with page #1 on the third page of my document

(2) I want to alternate the page number position for even/odd numbered
pages.

It's too bad that Microsoft doesn't see fit to just include simple,
straight-forward directions for something so simple. Word in Office XP was
10 times easier! Those options were "up front" and simple.

If you can tell me how you would do this in Word 2002, then I can tell
you how to do the same thing in Word 2007.

It is basically like you would do in XP but in some cases easier and some
cases harder to do.

After the end of the text on the second page insert a section break (Page
Layout, Breaks dropdown, Next Page). This will start the page numbering on
the 3rd page.

Next Position your typing cursor somewhere on the 3rd page. Click on Insert
tab, Footer, Edit footer. At the top of the screen you will see Header &
Footer Tools with the word Design under it and below that make sure that
Different Odd & Even pages is checked and Show Document Text is checked.

Next, place your typing cursor on the Footer for Page 3 (should read (Odd
page footer Section 2) above the footer location.) Click on Page number
dropdown and then on format numbers. In this dialog box click on Start at:
and type in the number 1. Click OK. Click on Page numbers again. Next in
the dropdown click on Bottom of Page and then select your location for the
page from one of the three locations shown. Your page number for the Odd
number pages will start at number 1 and all Odd pages will be Odd numbered.

Next for the even number pages, place the insertion point somewhere in the
footer for page 4. Repeat the same for the Even page footer for section 2 in
reference to selecting the location of the page number but don't do the
Start at from the previous paragraph.

Page numbering is now set. Any additional information for the header and
footer can be set in the same manner. Once done with the header and footer
configuration click the Close header and Footer button on the ribbon to get
back to regular editing.

Let us know if this helps.

One more question from a first time user. I think I understand your
advice, but how can I tell in which section I am in WOrd 2007? It used
to be listed in the bottom left ?footer? of on the MS WOrd screen.
Thank you

Hi JoAnn,

Thank you for getting back to me. I also use print layout view, but
the only thing that appears in the bottom left is the page number of the
total (eg 1 of 1). In my Word 2003, it also listed the section number
and the page number within the current section. Thank you for trying,
but I'm still lost.

Hi;

With your document open, right click in the lower left area. You should get
a popup menu where you can select "Section" which, I think, will display the
information you are seeking.
