Page numbers not constant

C

Catch 23

In a Visio 2003 document, the Right: field of the Footer panel
contains:

Page &p of &P

The document contains about 15 pages. If I print all 15, the footer
shows "Page 1 of 15" on the first page and so on.

But, if I print pages 5-7, the footer for page 5 shows "Page 1 of 3".

I supposed may be useful for someone, but I want the page numbers to
refer to the entire document, not the print set.

Is there some way to make this happen?

The behavior you are seeing is normal, although frustrating for your goal.
The total pages count is referenced when the page set is created, so the
number of pages is related to the printout, not to the document.

You may be able to circumvent this by creating a User defined field, which
you could reference in your footer. However, you would have to manage the
updating of that value when you add/remove pages, so it might not be worth
the pain.

I guess the first question to ask is, is your drawing size the same as your
printed page? If so, then you should be using the Visio classic method for
what other apps call "H&Fs" and use a background page. Background pages are
far more versatile.

Originally, "H&F" type information was handled by background pages, but
around version 3, a request was made to have some way of identifying the
individual pages when Visio drawing printed over many physical pages. So in
addtion to background pages, H&Fs were added, but they have a more limited
list of items and locations that can be used.

So that is why you are seeing Page 1 to 3 because the H&Fs refers to the
printed page, not the drawing page.

For most Visio drawings, background pages are the way to go. Even if they do
print on multiple pages, there are a few techniques for still using
background pages. ( Basically you map the same information in multiple
locations on the background page to match the printed page and use formulas
for the page numbers)

PS: Barb is way to young to remember when H&Fs were requested by a
CompuServe user as a feature to address the problem of printing on multiple
pages.
