You have section breaks in your document, and the starting page number is
specified for some sections. In the header/footer of each problem section,
click the Format Page Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar and
make sure the numbering is set to "Continue from previous section." If you
have any Continuous sections in the middle of a page, you'll need to either
remove the section breaks temporarily, add a page in order access the
header/footer, or use Insert Page Number | Format Page Number to get at the
numbering of those "island" sections (be careful to press Close in the
Insert Page Number dialog so you don't get an extra page number).

I am experiencing a problem with Word 2000. In the task
bar of the document where Page and Section are displayed
the portion of the display that shows that you are on page
1/total number of pages, the total number of pages
continuously increases until finally it reads "1/****".
This document contains only 390 pages so from page 1 it
should read 1/390. Please let me know if you have any idea
of the cause. Thanks in advance.
