Page numbers restart at 2 following pages with multiple section breaks

Anyone seen this problem? I have a 300+ page document in
Word 2002. Many pages have multiple section breaks to
allow for multi-column/single column combinations on a
single page. Even though I've specified "continue from
previous section", Word insists on restarting page
numbers after some of these multi-section pages, and most
bizarrely, starts the number at 2! If I select the page
number and try again to make it continue from previous
page, it simply jumps back to the previous (correctly
numbered) page but does not correct the 2.

This is driving me INSANE!!!!

Usually the problem is that the number is restarting in one of the sections
in the middle of the page (which have headers and footers even though
they're inaccessible. To root out such problems, either remove the breaks
temporarily or insert page breaks in the middle of the center sections to
force the section to have an accessible header/footer so you can use Format
Page Number.

Alternatively, put the insertion point in this center section and go to
Insert | Page Numbers, click on Format..., make the necessary change, OK,
then be sure to click Close rather than OK back in the Page Numbers dialog.

Thanks Suzanne. The workaround works, but on a document
this long with this many multi-section pages, it's going
to take too long, particularly because mucking with
section breaks sometimes seems to have far-reaching
consequences for distant sections!!!!

I've admitted defeat and made the entire document single
column. I do fine with Word until I start trying to use
tables or columns, and then all hell breaks loose :)

Thanks for your assistance.
