page numbers restart mid document

don't know how it happened but I have a document that starts its page
numbers over on what should be page 7 and I can't seem to get rid of it by
changing things in the document menu (it reverts back thereafter) or
changing around section breaks. There is no actual page break at that spot,
but from one page to the next, the document thinks it's going from page 6
to page 1. This gets annoying when trying to print this very long document
and confuses the printer mightily. I'm not talking about page numbers
inserted onto the pages here -- I don't have them. I'm talking about the
internal formatting of the document. I also tried adding the section on to
the end of a new document, re-saving it, etc. Any ideas?

Corrupt document (or section) perhaps. Since you didn't give us your OS and
Office/Word version numbers, see here for various options (if you're using
Safari, you may have to reload once or twice):

Your post says there "are not actual page breaks" where the page numbering
falters. A new section will cause page numbering to start at 1 if the
footer is set a certain way. The first thing I would do is to copy your
entire document into a new file (to preserve the old file). Then I would be
absolutely sure there is only one section for the entire document. After
that I would set page numbering in the header or footer.

Good luck.

I'm running 10.3.3. Word X for Mac; calls itself service release 1.
And it's about a 20 page document that's full of tables and section breaks
between the tables. But I've tried deleting section breaks and can't even
seem to do that... So I will try all the document corruption stuff. I do think
it is something like that as I have tried all the saving into new documents I
can muster. Thanks.

To delete section breaks, put ^b in the Find field and ^p in the Replace
with field.

Re doc corruption, see here if necessary:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/DocumentCorruption.htm
(hit reload a few times in Safari, if that doesn't work, try Explorer)

Note that SR 1 is not fully updated:

And re Bill's comment, clicking on More, then using the Special menu in Find
& Replace gives you access to all sorts of wonderful capabilities.

Clicking ¶ on the standard toolbar shows you nonprinting characters, note
that you cannot delete the ¶ directly after a table--if you are accidentally
selecting that, that may be why you are having problems deleting section
breaks.
