Page numbers with a gray background problem

Anyone know why my page numbers now display a gray background? That makes it
very difficult to even see the page numbers even in <Header/Footer> mode.

Anyone know why my page numbers now display a gray background? That makes it
very difficult to even see the page numbers even in <Header/Footer> mode.

Go to Tools > Options > View and change the Field Shading dropdown
from "Always" to "When selected" or "Never".
