I am trying to renumber pages on a 100 page document. I did not create this
document. The page numbers are not sequential. Can anyone help me figure
this out. I'm at my wits end. Thanks anyone.

Thanks for responding,
My job was to insert photos, charts and graphics. These page numbers are
included within the footer. After adding blank pages and inserting these
items the page numbers were not acceptable I ended up with several page ones
for example, and the numbers would start over after inserting a graphic
further into the document. I believe that section breaks may be the problem,
but I can't understand how to correct his. I am desperate enough that I
would like to hand number them if can, they will have to be entered into the
footers. I have Word XP.

Hi Ben,

You're right about the sections.

First let's get all the page numbers to run consecutively from start to
finish. Then if you want something different, at least you know what you're
starting from.

Open the document in Print Layout view. Put the cursor at the beginning of
the text on the first page and click View > Header and Footer. Besides
popping you into the Header pane, that will display the Header/Footer
toolbar.

On the toolbar, the third icon from the left shows the tooltip "Format Page
Number". Click it to open its dialog. Near the bottom of the dialog are two
option buttons, "Continue from previous section" and "Start at". Since
you're currently looking at Section 1, it doesn't make much sense to
continue from a nonexistent "previous" section, but that option should be
selected. Click OK.

On the toolbar, just to the left of the Close button, is one that says "Show
Next". Click that (maybe more than once, depending on whether first-page or
even-odd headers exist) until you're in Section 2. Click the "Format Page
Number" button, make sure the "Continue from previous section" option is
selected, and click OK. Repeat this step until you have reset or verified
every section in the document, and they're all continuous. Finally, click
the Close button to return to the document body.
