page numbers

Good day to everyone, and I hope I have come to the right place.

I have a problem in formatting a 166 page document, that is, a book, made up
of intro pages and chapters.

I have about 5 intro pages (title, legals, dedication etc) and the rest as
text.

I want (need) the first 5 pages un - numbered and page numbering to start
with page 1 at the first text page.

I have tried three different ways to do this, but the best I have been able
to do is to persuade the thing to number the first text page as '1' BUT the
thing also insists in numbering the first pages 1,2,3 etc.

If I delete those first numbers, it deletes the whole lot.

What might I be doing wrong?

Is there a proper way that I have missed?

A solution would be very much appreciated.
