page numbers

Why is it that in previous Word versions (I am now using Windows Office 2007)
it was so simple to include numbers in the upper right hand corner and not
have the number for page 1 show in the upper right hand corner. Now despite
many efforts I cannot do what was simple in previous Word versions. Are
Microsoft designers sadists? Do they not know how to follow through in
keeping minor procedures simple? Are they afraid of simple or are they too
simple to be able to recognize a good thing. There are specialists who are
professional in how to mess up what is already apparent and understandable
and workable so that it is not understandable, workable or apparent and those
people reside at Microsoft in the Microsoft design section.
Now if I type 2 on the second page the number 2 shows up on every page!
How, when and why would anyone ever want every page numbered as 2? I know
who. Those brains at Microsoft who know how to dream about the money they
earn but are not able to think about what is real in the conscious world.

If you type 2 in the header of a document in any version of Word then that 2
will be repeated in every page to which that header applies. If you want
page numbers in the header, insert a page field.. You can either type that
field CTRL+F9 for the brackets - { Page } or insert it from the Insert >
Quickparts menu. Nothing has changed - except the user interface.

I would have to disagree with the statement that "Nothing has changed." In
fact, the old Insert | Page Numbers feature is gone, and I am ambivalent
about that. In a way I am glad, because the feature made it very easy to
insert page numbers but less easy to remove them (not like Format |
Background | Printed Watermark, where you are given the option of removing
the watermark; there was no option to remove page numbers through the
dialog). And because the page numbers were inserted in a frame, which
sometimes caused problems with an actual header/footer and, if the number
was deleted but the frame left, had a tendency to wander, it was
problematic.

But it can't be denied that having a one-click way to insert a page number
top or bottom, left or right or center (or even inside/outside) AND omit it
from the front page (without having to know anything about First Page or
Odd/Even Page headers/footers) was a blessing for many casual Word users.

It is true that the old Insert | Page Numbers dialog no longer exists, so it
is a little more difficult to insert simple page numbers. How you insert one
now depends a little on what else you may want to put in the header or
footer. If all you need is a page number, then use Insert | Page Number and
choose Top of Page or Bottom of Page. In your case, you'll choose the Top of
Page gallery picture that shows the page number in the right corner. Note
that you can also access these choices from the contextual Header & Footer
Tools Design tab when the insertion point is in the header or footer
(double-click in the header or footer area to activate it).

To omit the page number on the first page, click the "Different First Page"
box on the Header & Footer Tools Design tab. This gives you a separate First
Page Header/Footer, which you leave empty. To replicate the Inside/Outside
choice of the old Insert | Page Numbers dialog, you have to choose
"Different Odd & Even Pages" and insert the page field in the appropriate
location in the Odd Page Header/Footer and Even Page Header/Footer.

If you will be including other text in the header or footer, it is better to
use the "Current Position" item instead of one of the building blocks, since
it doesn't replace other content. When you use any of these selections, you
are, as Graham pointed out, inserting a PAGE field, which changes on each
page. This is the equivalent of using the Insert Page Number button on the
Header and Footer toolbar in earlier versions of Word.

For much more on using headers and footers, including page numbers, see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm, with special attention
to the new part about Word 2007.
