Page numbers

How do I automatically get continuous page numbers for 81 pages of a word
document that has 5 sections? The page numbers appear in the footer as “Page
x of y.†Each section, from section 2 through section 5, shows “Same as
Previous†above the footer. The header across all 5 sections is the same but
the footers are not. There is discontinuity between section 2 and 3.

The page numbers for sections 1 and 2 are continuous: and read “ Page 1 of
81†through “Page 9 of 81.†However,. the footer on the first page of section
3 reads “Page 1 of 81.†It should read “Page 10 of 81.†The page numbers
continue in sequence though sections 3, 4 and 5. The last page of the
document shows “Page -72- of 81.†[Note: starting in section 4, dashes are
automatically inserted before and after the page number.]

How do I get rid of this discontinuity between sections 2 and section 3? I
want the first page of the document to read “Page 1 of 81†and the last page
to read “Page 81 of 81.â€

Heh! I thought it would be easy to answer this.
Sometimes Word is *so* obtuse.

Select the footer (if that is where the page numbers are) of the new
section, and choose *Insert* » Page numbers...
Hit the "format" button.
Yet another dialog box will open where you get a chance to check
"continue from previous section"

Insert? *Insert?* What were they thinking of?

How did I discover this?
Well... Help. Put "page numbers" in the search field, then choose
"Change the page numbers in different parts of the document"

Word's help never ceases to baffle me.
Sometimes it comes up with something useful, but not often enough to
make me try unless I'm desperate. As I was.

For the dashes, I'd look in much the same place. Then play about in
"number format"

Sometimes I think of Office as "Work Prevention"
