Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) Processor: Power PC I have followed all the directions to insert page nos. They appear in grey on my screen, but when I try to print, the page numbers disappear.
How do I keep them?

In order to most effectively help we need to know:

Specific version & update level of both Office & OS X,
Exactly what you've done & how you went about it (there are several ways to
insert page numbers),
What - if any - corrective steps you've taken as well as their result,
Any additional details about the document itself, &
Whether it's the 1 document or do all behave the same.

In this case I tend to think it might be that your printer driver may need
to be updated. Check the mfr's web site to see if a more current version is
available. Also confirm your update levels for Office & OS X.

Do the page numbers display in Print Preview? Do they show up in the Quick
Preview in the Print dialog or in Apple's Preview app?

Without the additional info I'm not sure what else to suggest.

The OS X i 10.4.11, but I don't know about the office. I downloaded 2008 office suite recently. I haven't taken any corrective steps. The document is a book I'm putting together to send to a self publisher. All documents are doing the same. The number appears on my screen, but does not appear in Print Preview, etc.
I'm thinking of converting the entire 150 page file back to word 2004.

You can determine your current version of Office by going to the 'About
____' in the application menu of any Office program. If it shows the 'Latest
Installed Update' as anything less than version 12.2.4 go to the Help menu &
select 'Check for Updates'.

Be sure to check on the printer driver - it's more critical than most people
realize.

Hi Connie:

That's a fairly standard indication that the paper size set for the document
is not the size in the printer (or: the size the printer thinks it has...)

Get into Format>Document, check the paper size is what is in the printer,
and check that the document margins are allowing room for the page numbers
(the page number paragraph should be at least 1.25 cm from the edge of the
paper, or it may not print...)

Cheers

It looks as if the page #s are outside the margins, but I'll be darned if I can figure out how to move them.

Open your header or footer, depending where your page numbers are.

If you cannot "select" the page numbers when you are inside your header or
footer, that's WHY they are outside the margins.

So delete the ones you have, then go into the Footer and put them back in
again, on the paragraph that appears inside the footer. That paragraph is
positioned by the "Distance from edge" measurement in the
Format>Document>Margins property.

Watch the video "Create headers and footers for documents" in the Word Help
to see exactly how to do this.

It's really important NOT to sit there trying to "figure this out" when
working with Word: if you ever find you don't know something, go straight to
the Help and look it up. There's far too much to "remember" in Word, get in
the habit of looking it up each time you need it.

Hope this helps
