{page} prints instead of numbers

I am using Word 2000.Recently, when I click on insert
numbers, I get the word page in brackets. It is also not
where I selected it in the format box. How do I fix this.
I just want simple page numbers in manuscripts starting
at page 2 in a header on the outside right.

File>Print>Options>Include with document. Uncheck field codes

Look at Tools>Options>View and uncheck "field codes"
Sorry for the confusion. I went back and realized I had
misunderstood Mary's original question. ALT+F9 will also
toggle show field codes on/off.
