Page reference fields

Help! I'm a technical writer updating a Users Manual for
a company, and the previous writer used Fields that kept
page reference numbers up to date. For example, "refer
to page 43 for more information" would automatically
update page 43 if more pages were added to the manual.

Can someone tell me how this is done?

Hi Kitty,

Look at the "Overview of adding cross-references" page
(including all the links to related topics) in the Word
helpfile, and the Insert-> Cross-Reference dialog. The
capability is quite detailed. One thing a newbie often
misses is that the field doesn't update instantaneously.
Ordinarily it updates when you print, but to see the
new result after you've done some editing, select the
field, or the text surrounding it, or better yet the
whole document, and press F9.

Depending on what sort of targets the previous writer
used, you will probably also find it useful to work with
bookmarks displayed (Tools> Options> View-> Bookmarks).
