Page setup is grayed out in word 07 on starting, why?

I have come across a problem with word that I have never had before. On
opening a new document or starting word, the cursor is no longer on the top
left but in the centre with a blue dashed box around it which expands as you
type. Page setup is grayed out and I have tried various other menu tabs but
nothing seems to work. Help!
