Page Transition Problem - Summary Update Part 3

C

Chip Mochel

I have asked, and received answers to, questions about Page Transition
effects. To re-cap:
o Page Transition effect does not work.
o I set-up a basic 2 page test site with each page linked to the other.
o I have set up an event, effect, and effect duration for/on each of the 2
pages.
o In Internet Explorer "Internet Options" I have made sure the "Enable
Effects" box was checked. In fact it turns out this box is checked as part
of the system defaults.
o I use Windows XP.
o Whether in "Design" mode or "Preview in Browser" mode (from "File" drop
down menu) the transition effect still does not work.

Does anyone have a next step / idea solution?

Hi Chip,

I am no expert, but I have put together a page transition effect, and then
abandoned it for compatability. No that it matters, code not read by a
browser is just ignored.

I can't recall whether you sent a url for this problem. If you haven't one,
you could perhaps post the code.

One thought, have you opened it directly in IE rather than in FP ?

What is the URL of the page?

Thanks Trevor:
I am sure I am less an expert the you. I have worked at trying to get this
effect for three days now. To get to basics I got down to making a 2 page
site with one word on each page just to see learn how to make this effect
work. Thus it obviously exists only on my computer and has no real URL. I
have tried to open it in every mode possible. The only "direct" "IE" mode
that I know of (or how to do) is through the "Preview in Browser" option in
the "File" drop down Menu. I have chosen every size/version of Microsoft IE
available in this drop down option.

If you have any more ideas I would apprecite hearing them. Like you I might
abandon the effort...but not yet.

You have spent so much time on something that many viewers don't like or
that doesn't work outside of IE.

Chip,
It's not going to work on your machine unless you are running a server on your machine.

In other words if you open your web C:\My Documents\My Webs\yourwebname (or any variation beginning with you harddrive letter) - thats called a disc-based web (NO server) - you're NOT going to see the transistions work.

You have to publish to the online server ( http://www.whatever.com ) to see it work.

That being said...transistions are annoying.

First Rob thanks again. I must say you almost have me convinced to give up
on page transition...almost. Are you saying that there is some way to
"publish" a site on line through some external (to my computer) server that
exists for the specific purpose of allowing individuals (like me) to run, or
"publish", a "test" of their site just to see if it functions properly
without having to "really" publish it ? (sign up, pay mone, etc.) I thought
that was exactly why Frontpage had the internal disc based web...to make sure
your site worked BEFORE going to all the trouble?

Not knowing if the "whatever" site you wrote was just an example or a "test"
site as I mentioned above I actually entered that and found a note that said
that site was under construction and was forwarded to a "funnies" site.

I am amazed none of the "help" information mentioned that the effect
wouldn't work on an internal "disc" based "web".

So do these external server sites for testing a web page exist? If so are
there others and how do you find them?

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash Gordon®\)

If you're using XP Pro (not Home) you can install the server & fp extensions on your home machine and fully test the FP web on it (database, etc.) if you're using XP Home you can't run a server so you end up using disc-based webs ( I do...my server's outdated).

Why be concerned about testing live? No one's gonna see it for a while anyway...just publish it to your server. It's not like it will be spidered by search engines immediately, so not many people will know where it is unless you tell them...and even still you could always put up a dummie index page with no page links after you're finished testing.

hehee..the "whatever" wasn't a real site... I meant it literally..."whatever the name of your web is" :)

I've had this problem myself and found it to depend on where the line of
code located. Is some cases, I had to move the line of code higher or lower
(which won't effect appearance of course). Go to the bottom of FrontPage
and select Spilt... so you can see the code on half the screen and regular
design mode on the other half. Copy all the lines of code from the top to
the point where it has the Transition and Duration. Paste this in a reply,
to this newsgroup.

You could give us the website so we can look at it ourselves too.

If your publishing to a free site, they may not allow the transitions. I
can't remember if the tranistions are FrontPage Extensions or Not. If so,
your server must have Extensions loaded on the server.

Having said all this, you can try moving the one line of code to different
places to see if it conflicts with something else.

JCO

If your looking for free server space to load your website too, there are
many.
I used http://www.angelfire.com.
This server will allow you to publish to it (once you create your free
service login and password) so everybody in the world can see your site.
This will allow you to test everything.

The bad side to this free server space is that they will put advertising on
your pages. It's not bad.... just depends on what you want and what you are
trying to accomplish.

Bottom line.... no body will see it anyway... Unless you specifially give
them the link to the site you create (on the server... free or paid). The
free servers will not add your stuff to the search engines.

(What are all these “&quot†‘s about?)…anyway…

I am using XP home so I presume you’re saying I don’t have an “internal
server†per se with which to “test†my site. Are you saying I can post my
web site to a free “test server†somewhere out there so I can see how it will
actually look and function to the outside world? If so how does one find out
where those free test sites are? It seems almost incomprehensible to me that
Microsoft would not make their internal “disc-based†server in such a way as
to allow one to test their site, with all the options available (in their
program!) including page transition effects without having to publish it
first.

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash Gordon®\)

Yes, I'm saying if you have XP Home you don't have a server on your local machine...and testing a disc-based web is not quite a full test.

Personally, I wouldn't waste time testing on free server, because sometimes you have to jump trough hoops just to get the site to work around all the ads and added junk *they* put on your pages...and then what are you really testing? Certainly not your real site...why waste the time. Get yourself a good host, Publish your site and muck around with it on the server your gonna actually use.

But..of course you can if you want...Tripod? Angelfire? Do a Google for free webserver, and see if any have FP extensions enabled for free. Don't expect much tech help for free though.

Final thanks Rob. I was going to send this to you personally but your
profile showed something ending in ".invalid" which looked like it wouldn't
work so I am posting here.

You have convinced me to abandon me efforts for now. I thought it
important to understand this elemnt from the beginning as I was building a
site. Now i think I will do as you say and build it and when ready to
publish I'll include the page transition effect and if it works well fine, if
not I'll remove it and move on.

Thanks again for your help. This site where I can get help from people like
you is a tremendous help...I am glad I found it.

Thanks again Rob.

You're welcome.

My em address is munged on the ng you would just remove "invalid" and put .com there to email me.
