pagenumbering in a document with sections

I'm trying to built a document with three continuous sections and
successive pagenumbers. The only problem is that the number of pages
in the middle section can vary. This means that I can not enter a
pagenumber to start with in the last section. Selecting 'continue from
previous section'does not result in successive pagenumbers.
Please help...

Did you put in the page number with the header/footer tool bar or the
Insert, Page Number selection? Or did you type it in manually?
Autogenerated page numbers insert the first two ways will
automatically repaginate for varying numbers of pages.

Sorry for the late reply. I've been on vacation.
The page numbers are inserted in the header as field code
{PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT} and the result is a non-successive numbering.
eg. 1of4, 2of4, 2of4, 3of4, 4of4 and 5of4. For your information more
than one page of data has been entered in page 2 which is the
unprotected section. When data is entered of less than one page the
numbering is correct. How do I fix this?
