Paginating a series of chapter

P

Pamsy

I am working on a series of chapters of a book and that
will be edited many times over. How do I set up some kind
of page number linkage so that the chapter beginning page
numbers are automatically calibrated upon printing?

Hi Pamsy

I'm not quite clear what you want to do with the page number linkage. If you
want a table of contents telling you the page number on which each chapter
starts, all you need is to insert a table of contents field. Look up 'table
of contents' in the help files to tell you how to do this, or, if you want
to get your hands mucky, look up 'TOC field' and insert the TOC field
yourself. The latter option is a little more work, but gives you a lot more
control over what happens.

If you want to have a cross reference in another part of the document
(something like 'see chapter 3, begining on page 32'), then you need to
insert a cross reference field. Do this by going to the insert menu and
choosing 'Cross reference'. The dialog box that comes up will allow you to
insert a cross reference to the relevant page number that will update if the
page number changes. Again, look this up in the help files if you're not
familiar with this feature.

Or was it something else entirely that you needed?

I think Pamsy has the chapters in separate documents. This makes keeping the
numbering continuous much more difficult. Unless the book is unusually
large (upwards of 10,000 pages or containing a huge number of graphics),
it's usually much more satisfactory to put it all in a single file.
