Palm Sync after sp2

P

Peter Ellefson

After the update...

I now have an "On My Computer (OMC)" calendar and address book and an
"Exchange Account" calendar and address book. After I synced the Treo 650
there was nothing on the Palm...I assume because there is nothing in the "On
My Computer" calndar and address book.

Anyone know how to tweak Entourage so the Treo will recognize the data in
the Exchange Account instead of the OMC data.

Thanks.

Same thing for me. I had to move everything back in On my computer :-\

That's why I didn't sync my palm yet. I was afraid of that happening.

I am wondering if the Palm will sync with the local account, or the
default account. Since you have already cleared your palm, you have
nothing to lose. :)

Try going into accounts and making your Exchange Account the default
account.

Any better?

Palm sync goes to your default account...

Beyond Palm Sync, here's a bit of the logic on how Entourage does things in
SP2 with multiple calendars and address books.

- Whenever possible, Entourage attempts to save things in a contextually
related account
- When Entourage is unable to determine a contextually related account, it
will save things in the default account

For AppleScript and Palm Sync (or any other application that is unaware of
the new multiple calendar/address book support), the default account
determines which calendar or address book such apps will use.

Hope that helps.

Confirmed. Setting my default account to be the Exchange account kept
my palm full of all my data after a sync.

There is no way to "tweak" it. Perhaps Missing Sync will bring out an update
that syncs to the exchange calendar and address book on request. Or perhaps
they can't - it may depend totally on the Entourage Conduit, which doesn't'.

I will be releasing a free script soon that copies events and contacts from
the Exchange calendar and address book to local, or vice versa. Either all
items or just selected items, as you wish.

When I sync my palm, it pulls all of my information from my exchange account
and doesn't use the information in the "On My Computer." In the Conduit
settings for the Exchange Conduit, you can specify where you want the pda to
sync with.

I don;t think there is any such thing as the "exchange" conduit. The
conduit we have is for Entourage and that's it. It does not even let you
chose which of the address books and calendar to synch with...

For the obvious reason that there was only one calendar and address book
(the default one, which is now the local one) when the conduit was created
18 months ago.

That would only be obvious if the conduit hadn't been updated to 11.2 for
SP2. Given the radical changes included in SP2, it would be nice to have
the option of which address book and calendar you want to sync.

Unfortunately, those changes we're not added. So the current functionality
is the same as it was 18 months ago. :)

Microsoft has already announced that they plan to integrate Entourage with
Tiger Sync Services, which will ultimately be much better than current Palm
Synching. Unfortunately, there are still Apple Tiger bugs which made this
impossible to effect this for this SP 2 update, the original plan. But that
only became apparent (that Apple couldn't fix the bugs in time for OS 10.4.1
or 10.4.2) after MS had already devoted some effort to it - effort they will
return to as soon as the Apple bugs are fixed. I think it's quite
understandable that they then had no time to drop other activity (which
would have resulted either in SP 2 not having many of the features it does,
or it still wouldn't be ready for months). I can't see that it makes much
sense devoting resources to upgrading the conduit (don't forget all the
"extra fields" of Palm OS 5) when the plan is actually to switch to Sync
Services. No sooner would they have finished the work than they'd be
scrapping it.

I hate to sound like a fool -

I have OSX 10.4.2 and Office 11.2.0. I just installed Office SP2.
Should I not sync my Palm? Is there anyway to remove the "On this
Computer" identification from the folder list?

You can't remove it from the identification, but if all your contacts
and calendar entries are in the On My Computer, then synching with a
Palm shouldn't be a problem.

As regards this post, Paul, what does this mean specifically for those of us
who sync Entourage and a Palm? Will the Palm Conduit no longer work? What do
you mean by Tiger Sync Services? I assume that means syncing through iSync.
Is that right? Would this mean that Entourage would then be "syncable" with
Apple Mail, Address Book and iCal, or would this now be unncessary? What
happens to syncing of other (non-MS or Apple) apps with this upcoming
change? Thanks for any info you might have from the Redmond Elves.

Jim Banks

p.s. Whatever happened to the plan to make the Entourage database
"Spotlight-able?"

It works, but it only syncs the "on my computer" entries.

Yep. Tha'ts what it is.

Yep. Tha'ts what it is.

If you're synching to an external device like a cell phone. iSync will need
to be involved, yes. Sync Services is actually the mechanism on your
computer that accepts input from all applications, in addition to iSync
devices, that have compatible items like contacts, calendar events, etc. ,
ad outputs to the same devices. In the case of synching to or from an online
..Mac account, iSync is no longer necessary and is not used.

So I just switched back to Entourage because iSync syncing with Palm
for iCal/Address Book was excruciatingly slow. Quite regularly it
could take 10-15 minutes to sync. If Microsoft is going to 'migrate'
to Tiger Sync, does that mean Entourage will SLLOOWW down big time
with the syncing, too?

David Blaymires

It works, but it only syncs the "on my computer" entries.

That's not my experience. I have 7 accounts in Entourage 2004 SP2. One is
an Exchange account, and that is my default account - it has been my default
account for ages. After upgrading, I synched with my Treo 600 without
changing anything and I had no problems. I continue to synch every day with
my Exchange account. All items are updated as expected to my Exchange
account - which is exactly what I want.

For those who have only been able to get it synched with the On My Computer
folders, and really want it to synch with the Exchange Account, try this:

1. Synch one more time, and make a backup of your Main Identity Entourage
data.
2. Set the Exchange account (under Tools/Accounts) as the default account.
3. Alter the Entourage conduit settings to Handheld overwrites Entourage on
the Address Book, Calendar and Tasks (if that's what you want in the
Exchange account folders). Make sure you click on "Do Once then
Synchronize".
4. Synch again - all the info should be downloaded from your Palm to
Entourage, into the Exchange folders.

Its working well for me. It should do for you.
