'PALMAPP.DOT' caused serious error when opened....

XP,SP2, MS OfficeSmBusiness 2003, various sftwr including PalmPilot Desktop
Application.

When I open MS Word (under any User Acct) I get a MS Office Word
Prompt...."The document 'PALMAPP.DOT' caused a serious error the last time it
was opened. Do you want to continue?" If I select "NO", I can get it to open
OK if I go through the following steps...
The next MS Office Word Prompt says"Word cannot open this document template.
C:\Program Files\...\startup\PalmAPP.DOT" If I select OK it will then open
up a new MS Word document and allow me to proceed.

MS Word and PalmPilot Desktop Application have coexisted for a year on this
box without incident. I cannot think of anything that occured at the same
time that this conflict began that could have caused the problem.

Any ideas what caused the confict?
More importantly, how do I solve the conflict?
Thank you,
EZ

Start by removing palmapp.dot from the Word startup folder. Word should then
run normally.
Attend to orphan files -

Reintroduce the dot file. If you still get the error it seems likely that
either palmapp.dot is corrupt (remove it and reinstall the software) or it
is in conflict with one of Windows/Word's recent updates, in which case
you'll need an update. It might be a plan to see if there is an update now.

Graham, Thanks for the suggestion. I visited your Word MVP web site, and will
use it often to improve my knowledge of Word as I am a newbie.

I was unable to remove 'PALMAPP.DOT' from the Word start up folder as it was
empty. Does that make sense, or was I in the wrong file? (MyComputer/shared
Documents/C:/Doc & Set/User Acct/Applc data/MS/Word/STARTUP). I have the same
issue on the other user accts. And also with MS Word documents that originate
from another box .
Thanks for your insight, EZ

If you look in tools > templates and add-ins at the palmapp.dot filename, it
will show where the file is saved. Drag the dialog box wider to read the
full path - probably the Office startup folder.
