Panther killed spellcheck?

I installed Panther (OSX 10.3) and now I notice that my
spellcheck isn't working. I have it set to underline
spelling errors while typing, and when I run the Spellcheck
it says: "The spelling check is complete." I go to
Preferences>Spelling and Greammer and select "Recheck
document" and still no spellcheck. Has Panther really
killed my spellcheck? Thanx,
