Paperclip icon for attachments not immediately previewed in Expres

I am currently helping someone using IMAP in Outlook Express 6, and when he
receives a new email with an attachment the paperclip icon does not show up
unless the email is clicked on and displayed in the preview pane. Any
suggestions?
