para styles

have setup a style for Heading 1 . The followed by paragarph is
"Normal"

After completing 3 Heading 1 , I decide to change the style of para to
follow Heading 1 to say 'Funky".

At this point the problem is this change is applied to Heading 1
going forward. This does not change the paragarph style following
Heading 1 thru 3 that I have already typed

However if I change the style of Heading 1 itself say change the font
size of Heading 1 , word applies it to ALL occurences. My questions is
why does the same not apply to paragraph following the headers?

Am I missing something here.

Thanks

Yes, you are missing something.

The style for the paragraph following is applied to that (new) paragraph
when it is created. It is not a part or subpart of the original Heading 1
paragraph. http://addbalance.com/usersguide/styles.htm

Click in the paragraph and then click on the style in the Styles and
Formatting task pane.

The "Style for following paragraph" is applied as you press Enter at
the end of an existing paragraph. If a style was automatically applied
to the following paragraph by the previous one, it would be very
difficult (maybe even impossible) to format documents. In other words,
usually you should apply the desired style manually.

However, there are times when the application of a style can be
automated. This assumes that some sort of "pattern" can be identified.
For example, if you want to replace manual formatting with a certain
style, you can make use of Edit | Replace.

Other tasks, such as applying a style to (say) the first paragraph
after each heading, might be accomplished with a macro. Ask in a
programming newsgroup.
