I have been asked to convert an Excel spreadsheet used to track employees
daily disposition (i.e. Parade State). Currently the spreadsheet lists all
employees on the left and a column for each day of the week. That way when
the managers want to know who is in for the week, on course, on a business
trip, on holidays, etc they can just scan the list.
An example might look like this:
ID Name Dept 1 Feb 06 2 Feb 06 3 Feb 06 4 Feb 06 5
Feb 06…
02 Bloggins Act Course Course Vancouver
Vancouver
03 Smith Prj Holiday Holiday Holiday
Holiday
I am attempting to convert this into an Access 2000 database, but I am have
problems trying to figure out the viewing of the records for a daily/weekly
report. I envision a table for tombstone data (employee ID, name,
department, etc) and a sub-table to record their daily disposition/event with
only two date fields (a start date and end date) for the event, vice a date
for every day of the year which would be a nightmare to administer. Plus two
fields for the type and sub-type of disposition event and a comments field.
A problem that I can foresee is when an event can span multiple days
(holidays, courses, business trips), and how to get a query/report to view
the entry similar to Excel (a column representing each day). Not sure if I
am explaining this right, but essentially a scheduling type of database would
be close.
Not sure of the best way to tackle this. If someone has an example of
something similar that they can share, or point out a best course of action
to take, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you
