Paragraph and return markers showing up on e-mail forms

I am working on MS XP.

I have a newly occuring problem. Each time I open a new e-mail form or hit
reply to a received e-mail a series of (IIP) Paragraph markers and return
arrows immediatley show up at the end of each line and for the life of me I
can't figure out how to turn off this option. HELP!!!!

You are probably referring to a pilcrow ¶ You can turn them on and off by
holding the Ctrl key and Shift, then press the *. They are great for
helping to solve many formatting problems.

Ctrl + Shift + 8; not all keyboards have an asterisk on the 8 key.
