Paragraph break line at top of page

Hi there. Word sometimes deletes the line space between paragraphs when the
new paragraph falls at the top of the next page. However, this doesn't always
happen and sometimes I'm left with a line space at the top of the page. Is
there any way of fixing this other than manually deleting the line space?

Word suppresses Spacing Before at the top of a page; it does not ever
suppress or delete an empty paragraph, which is probably what is causing
your problem. If in fact the issue is Spacing Before, then note that it is
not (by default) suppressed after a manual page break or column break or a
section break.

Thanks a lot Suzanne. I hadn't realised that about Word not suppressing empty
paragraphs that fall as the first line of a new page (I was aware of the
Spacing Before bit). Does this mean that if you happen to have the line space
before a new paragraph falling at the top of the page, you're stuck with it
or you delete it manually, which means that, after editing, this paragraph
could end up on the same page as the previous paragraph but without the line
space between them? As an editor this happens to me occasionally. Thanks

To avoid the problem you are seeing, avoid blank paragraphs, and use Spacing
Before (or After) to create spacing betweeen text paragraphs. Also, be sure
to turn off the "Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style"
option for the style you are using.

Stefan has followed up on this, I see. This is a confusion common to users
who convert from WordPerfect, which *does* suppress a single "blank line"
(empty paragraph) at the top of a page. That is one of the many differences
between WP and Word and has a lot to do with the different object models. WP
doesn't have the same "container" concept that Word has and so treats
paragraphs more cavalierly.
