Paragraph Marks in MS Word Table of Contents

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help please. I'm using Microsoft Word and having
the same problem in both Word 2002 and Word 2003.

I am building a Table of Contents from my document Heading Styles 1, 2 and
3. My TOC1 style in the Table of Contents has a paragraph border beneath the
paragraph (so the entry in the TOC has a rule beneath it)

However - it only produces the rule under style TOC1 when, in the body of
the document, a Heading 2 or 3 style is used somewhere after a Heading 1. So
the styles TOC1, TOC2 etc are used in sequence in the ToC.

In the main body of the document, if one Heading 1 follows directly on from
another, without a Heading 2 or 3 in-between, the ToC shows two sequential
entries formatted in TOC1 style. The rule is not displayed until TOC2 style
is used again. It is almost as though Word does not recognise the paragraph
marks at the end of each entry in the ToC and does not begin a new paragraph
until a new style is used. As the entries are not recognised as separate
paragraphs, it will not insert a paragraph border.

Has anyone had a similar problem, or know of a work-around please?

I have had a similar problem and it actually took me quite some time to
figure out how to solve it. In your situation, you should be able to solve
the problem as follows:

1. Make sure you have two succeeding paragraphs formatted with TOC 1 style.
The paragraphs do not need to be in a TOC, you can just format any two
paragraphs with TOC 1.

2. Select the two paragraphs and while they are selected, you must modify
the TOC 1 style. From the Modify Style dialog box, select Format > Border >
Borders tab.

3. Since you have now selected two paragraphs, you are able to apply a
border _between_ paragraphs (the middle of the Preview drawing). That is what
you need – but you must also keep the bottom border. Apply other border
settings as needed. Click OK.

Hi Lene, many thanks for your help. That is fantastic, I wouldn't have
thought of using the border _between_ paragraphs option. It solves my
problem, thank you so much!!!!
