Paragraph Number ranges

C

Chuck Altman

I would like to create automatic numbered paragraphs. The
first few paragraphs are numbered 1,2,3. However, I would
like to number the next paragraph "4 - 7" (as in four
through seven). Then separate paragraphs 8,9,10. Then
another single paragraph with a numbered range "11 - 14".
Etc. How can I do this? And if possible, is it stable?

There's a way. It's klutzy, but it works.

Press Ctrl-F9 and between the brackets type { SEQ x }. That's your
numbering for paragraphs 1,2 and 3.

When you get to paragraph 4, put in *four* SEQ fields like this:

( SEQ x ) - ( SEQ x )( SEQ x )( SEQ x )

Now select the second and third fields in that line and apply hidden
font.

* To see the actual numbers instead of the code, press Alt-9.

* SEQ fields must be constantly updated. Easiest way is to select the
field(s) and press Ctrl-F9.

With two of the SEQ fields hidden, you'll now see 4 - 7.

After setting up paragraphs 1 through 7, you can create two AutoText
entries -- one for the one-number-at-a-time SEQ field and the other
for the fields with the hidden text. Select the fields (and the tabs
that follow them) and press Tools > AutoCorrect options > AutoText >
Add.

Your document will be the ultimate in stability and graduate Summa Kum
Klutze.

If, however, the desire is to replicate existing numbering that will never
change, I would suggest just typing the numbers in as plain text. Much more
maintenance-free in the long run.

Thank you both. I had originally tried to make the
paragraph number ranges work with Heading styles. Now
that was really klutzy!!!

I found it interesting that neither of you tried to steer
me in that direction.

Thanks again!
