Paragraph numbering breaks at level 6 - TestIndexNumbering.doc (0/1)

See the attached file, a one-sheet outline done in Word 2000 to
illustrate the problem.

In Word 2000, using automatic paragraph title numbering (Heading 1,
Heading 2, etc.), everything seems to work fine up through Heading 5,
then starting at Heading 6, numbering goes back to 1.1.1.1.1.1.

I have gone to Format->Style, and set up Heading 6 (with
Modify->Format) to be identical in every way I can see to the setup
for Heading 5, except for the indentations and 6 digits in the
paragraph number instead of 5, and still can't get the sixth level and
beyond to follow the 5th level properly.

This all worked perfectly in Word 97 but since I moved to Word 2000 I
haven't been able to get it to work past the 5th level.

Any ideas?

Thanks...

You don't have Level 6 linked to Heading 6. Do that and your problems will
be solved. Note, however, that if you do this as recommended, going through
Format Style for Heading 1, your number formats will change. I suspect that
you have set up numbering for each style separately rather than as an
outline-numbered list. If you want this to work reliably, follow the
instructions in
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html to make all
your headings part of the name list. You'll need to redefine the number
position of each level in the same dialog all at one time.

Good afternoon, Suzanne.

Thanks for the info and the pointer to that website. That's a real
gold mine. All is fixed now ... at least all having to do with
numbering (still having problems with all my links breaking when
migrating from Word 2000 to Word 2003...)

I see you're from down on the Alabama coast... hope you made it
through the hurricane without too much damage...

We personally (and most in our area) fared well during the Summer of the
Hurricane, but Katrina wiped out a lot of the nearby tourist attractions,
and our downtown area depends heavily on tourism, so it's a bit of a ghost
town.
