Paragraph Numbering when combining docs

I have just combined 5 documents that use auto para numbering. Is ther
a way to stop them renumbering to the previous documents last para.

As eventually I will be combining a lot of files I don't want to hav
to use the restart numbering option and remember which was the firs
number of the new doc.

Hi Jane,

If you're already cursed with documents that use manual restarts, you might
consider putting a hidden ListNum field at the start of the file, to set the
starting number.

Say you're using headings with outline numbering, and the first chapter
should get the number 7.
Put an empty "Heading 1" paragraph at the start of the document, with
{ listnum \L1 \s6 }
and format it as hidden.

If you then insert this document somewhere else, the hidden ListNum field
will be inserted, too, and the numbering will stay as it is.

In case you need to copy/paste different parts of the same document
somewhere else, there isn't a way to do that in a way that doesn't change
the numbers (and looses some of the applied restarts), short of converting
all automatic numbering to "hard" text.

Previous versions lost all restarts except for the first one in some pasted
text.

Word2002/2003 has very slightly improved on that: It will copy/paste the
restarts correctly once: the very first time you paste anything.
If you paste more than once, it will mess up the restarts just as previous
versions did.
