Paragraph spacing in numbered list

Another question, please.
I am not sure how to set up the style section 'Style for following
paragraph' as I never know when I am going to change between Level 1 and
Level 2. The < and > on the tool bar doesn't recognise the styles.

Make sure you have the styles defined as part of an outline-numbered list
(see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html), and
then you will be able to use the built-in shortcuts to promote/demote.
