Hi Fiona,
The advice of installing SP1 (and SP2) hasn't fixed the issue for me.
The SPs only suppress display of the Char formats in the Task Pane (as
long as the document hasn't been opened in an earlier version or saved
in an earlier version format). It does NOT keep Word from creating
these character styles.
Earlier postings suggest that the format painter may be a cause of
'char' problems. If the painter has been used extensively throughout
documents, is there any simple way of reversing this damage?
If you can open the file in Word 2000 or 97, or at least save in Word
6/95 *.doc format, then you'll see the Char styles in the task pane.
You can then click the little arrow next to the entry and use "Select
all n instances" to pick these up and "Clear formatting" or apply your
own character style. Afterwards, you should be able to delete the
"Char" styles (with the exception of anything linked to Heading styles
1 through 3).
