paragraph vs. text border

Using Borders and Shading, I can apply a nice neat line in the margin
to the right of a paragraph. However, I can't seem to figure out how
to have the same line appear for only half the paragraph. When I place
a right border around selected text, I get a box. How do I get a line
in the right margin for less-then-paragraph increments? Word 2004 Mac.

Are you trying to do this to highlight some sort of change? If so, you
can use "track changes". Off the top of my head I cannot remember the
exact menu clicks to get this working (I'm not at my Mac). However,
have a play and see what comes up. If necessary, you can trick "track
changes" by changing one word on each appropriate line from X to X
(i.e. change it to itself). Then a change line appears in the margin.
I do remember that "track changes" has the option of putting lines in
the left, right or "outside" margin.

Hoping that this helps.
