parameter doesnt work in mail merge access 2003

I want to select a specific record from my database to generate a mail merge
letter. When I set a [parameter] to select the specific record, the query to
which it relates disappears from the mail merge source list and the mail
merge doesnt run.

A colleague has vague recollections of a workaround but cannot remember how
it worked.

Can anyone help me please
