Parameters not allowed in this query

I have just tried to amend the criteria in an ODBC to allow users to input
parameters. Never had aporblem in the past but for some reason I am now
getting this message on screen when I add the [] to a criteria;-

Parameters not allowed in this query

does anyone have any ideas whats happening! I have copied the SQL statement
from another report and modified it to suite my needs, could that be the
problem?

It will need to be a straightforward SELECT query to use parameters
