Parsing xml file to include in html

Would anyone know if there is a way to parse an XML file (from the web) and
have some of the content added to an html file when it opens?

In a nut-shell, I want to build a local, unpublished "home page" on my
desktop and have it include chosen content from an xml file from the
internet. I assume it might require a script or something within the html
file?
