Passing field values to new forms

I have a custom form for job Estimates based on a journal form.

I want to specify a custom action ("Update") for the Estimate ("parent")
form. The new action would create a ("child") version of the same form in
which a number of the custom fields would be populated with the values in the
parent and fixed (uneditable), leaving others to be edited/updated.

My question - how to pass the values for the fixed fields from the parent
form to the child? I suspect I should know, but am too new at this to figure
it out.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

You can use the auto-loading capabilities of Outlook by 1) making the
generation of the child item, which is displayed in a custom for, an action of
the parent item, and 2) during the design of the child's custom form, choosing
the auto-loading fields from the category of the parent's custom form. The
parent custom form will be listed on that dropdown list from which you choose
categories of fields--like commonly used fields, all contacts fields. It will
be there only if the parent custom form is designed before the child's custom
form.

Thanks Hollis

I knew there had to be some pretty obvious way of doing it.

Appreciate the help.
