"Passive" Entreprise Resource pool?

Our organisation is considering implementing EPM at the colloboration level
initially ie not the resource mangament functionality. Can we still have the
Enterprise resource pool available to PMs using MSP professional so as to
provide for consistency of names across plans but for it not to trigger
assignments workflow messages and associated data sent ?

Yes, you can do this if you wish. Your Project Server administrator would
need to do the following to meet your requirements:

1. When creating resources in the Enterprise Resource Pool, set each
resource's Booking value to Proposed
2. Do not enter SMTP server information in PWA

#1 will prevent task assignments from appearing on each resource's timesheet
in PWA. #2 will prevent e-mail messages. When you are ready for resources
to begin reporting time in PWA, your Project Server administrator would need
to set each resource in the Enterprise Resource Pool to Committed, and enter
the SMTP server information in PWA. Hope this helps.

thanks Dale.

Having done that - do the "proposed" assigments still appear within the
Resource management functionality?

What do you mean by "resource management functionality?" Where in the
system do you wish to see this information?

sorry I meant in PWA under Resource tab eg so as to be able to see proposed
work against different resource types..even though we are not assigning them
the work through EPM. This will then enable me to progress the business case
benefits of switching off our existing RM system and using EPM in full.

If you mean the View Resource Availability option in the Resource Center
page, then yes, you can see the work and availability information there. To
do this, however, you will need to do the following:

1. Log into PWA and navigate to the Project Center page
2. Select one or more resources in the data grid and then click the View
Availability button
3. Click the View Options tab
4. Select the "View Proposed Bookings" option

If you mean the View Resource Assignments option, available in the sidepane
of the Resource Center page, then no, you cannot see the proposed
assignments there. If you need to see the assignments there, then I would
recommend you do the following:

1. Set all resources to Committed in the Enterprise Resource Pool
2. Set the View Timesheet permission to Deny on the Server Configuration
page in PWA

Step #2 above will hide the Timesheet page from everyone in the system.
When you are ready to begin tracking progress using the PWA timesheet page,
you can set the permission back to Allow. Hope this helps.

Dale, I'm following this thread on the sidelines because I'm interested
in being able to turn off emails. However, I'm leery of removing the
SMTP server information because our enterprise resources are identified
by their AD identification which is the same as their Outlook email ID.
In other words, our enterprise resources are identified by their
outlook addresses. Would we lose our resource pool if we knock out the
SMTP info?

Thanks,
Naomi

No. The SMTP information is used by Project Server to send e-mail messages
to people in various roles in the system. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll pass this info on to my admin.

If you only want some people to receive the e-mail messages from Project
Server, then open the Enterprise Resource Pool and remove the e-mail
addresses for those who should not get e-mail messages. DO NOT remove their
Windows User Account information, however. Project Server does not identify
people by their e-mail address; it identifies them by their Windows user
account. Hope this helps.

Note:

Removing the email addresses will generate errors in the server application
event log when the reminders routine runs. This should be noted while the
errors themselves can be ignored.
