Password dialog interferes with auto open macro

Hi,

I'm getting a problem that I believe is caused by a document's
password dialog. When I try to open the doc, I get the password
box and I get an error dialog saying the requested command could
not be performed because a dialog box is open.

Then, when I enter the doc, the macro executes twice, rather than
the once it should.

The macro in question simply goes to the end of the file and
inserts some blank paragraphs and the date or time. Now it does
that twice.

This didn't happen before I recently reinstalled Windows on a
reformat.

I suppose the way around this is to make the macro wait on the
password box or file painting. Or maybe someone knows a more root
solution.

Thanks for any input.

I've never gotten this error with a password dialogue but I have gotten it in
several other scenarios. Each time it was solved by closing the blank
document that Word so graciously supplies upon startup and/or that silly
Startup Task Pane (which can also be turned off in Options). I'm not sure if
that will help you but it was worth a shot I guess.

Hmmm. I have the Startup Task Pane turned off already. The blank
doc? I'm calling an existing doc with no instance of word already
open, so I don't think an initial blank doc is in the equation.

Another thing I noticed is that I get the same error when a .doc
is saved to desktop and I click its icon, even when no password
and no auto_start macro is involved (virtually a blank document).
The sub-dialog that the error refers to say to check file
permissions. But I'm running as administrator so I have no idea
what's going on here.

WindowsXP Home has some strange Read-Only weirdness going on,
whereby this parameter often cannot be reset. That's evidently
true of my Desktop, which shows as partially read only and will
not allow a change. I'm not sure if that's a factor in this
problem. And the original problem file, the one with the
autostart macro, does not reside on the desktop, but in the My
Documents folder structure.

Thanks,
p.
