Password protected document will not open with CORRECT password.

Error message: Word Cannot Open The Document. It also gives the same error
message if I intentionally enter the wrong password – when before it used to
say: “Incorrect Passwordâ€.

I’ve been opening this document almost daily for years, so I’m very
confident I have the correct password – all lower case. I had a new hard
drive installed (and XP Pro reinstalled), and kept the old drive as a slave.
I tried to open the document within the new drive and within the old drive,
and it still doesn’t open. I’ve even uploaded my backup copy of the document
from an on-line backup service – still won’t open. I even had another older
backup copy of the document on a floppy disk – won’t open that one either.
I’ve been using Word 97 all along (with all updates applied), including when
the password protected document DID open

I even uploaded the on-line backup copy of the document onto my laptop
computer – it won’t open there either. These backups were made at different
times onto different media. I’m thinking the problem may have to do with the
way my computer (or Word) was configured at the time I was opening the
document without problems.

Help appreciated.

The first and obvious question: are you able to open any of your other 'old'
documents or is it just confined to this one pass-worded document?

Please confirm that you are still using Word 97 too?
