password recovery?

I protected a document long ago on a computer that I hadn't been using, but
recently got it backup and running and forgot the password. Word97 on a W98
box. Tried all passwords I thought I'd named it.

I did some google searching and found recovery software, but almost all
charge you or only search up to 5 characters.

I'm looking for alternatives. I'd think there'd be a way to just remove the
password from the document, but I can't do that. Haven't seen it saved in
registry. Unsure what to do next, any ideas?

thanks

It wouldn't be a very effective password if you could just remove it, would
it?

There are people with higher intelligent quotients than yours, but you had
to get in some lame ass cheap shot because that's just the type of person
you are, huh Norm?

I was hoping for assistance, not a smartass... maybe somebody who can walk
and chew gum at the same time, which I doubt you can. Someone who might
know a backdoor, other than the one you shove your vibrators into.
