Any program you launch generates what is called a 'splash screen' to confirm
the launch & give you something to look at while the program loads. The
splash screens for the Office apps do indeed include the name of who the
software is licensed to along with what is called the Product ID.

Although the 20 digit Product ID is unique to the local installation of
Office it is not a Password. There are no passwords involved in the
launching of Office apps. The Product *Key* you enter when you install the
software is completely separate & distinct from the Product *ID* which is
automatically generated during installation. The Product ID is only provided
for identification in the event you ever have to communicate with Microsoft
about the product. It has nothing to do with security of any sort.

I think what she is saying is that somehow her password is appearing in the
splash screen, and now it's displayed for all the world to see.

Yes, you can get it out, but it's a fiddle :) First: be sure you check to
see if what Bob says describes your situation: if it does, you don't need to
do anything.

If you want to change the installed details, you have to delete two files.
Make SURE you have your CD Product Key available to re-enter before you do
this, because without it none of the applications will run after this.

~:Library:preferences:Microsoft:Office 2008:Microsoft Office 2008
Settings.plist

-and-

HD:Applications:Microsoft Office 2008:Office:OfficePID.plist

Once both files are gone, the next time you start any Office application, it
will prompt you for the CD Key. If the key is valid, you will get the
chance to enter the correct installation details.

Notes:

1) All Office applications must be quit at the time. If any are running,
this won't work.

2) You must delete both file: deleting only one has no effect.

3) You may need to set your finder Preferences to show hidden files to see
the second one.

To do that:

a) Open the Terminal window and paste in the following two command lines,
one-by-one, hitting "Enter" at the end of each one:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE

killall Finder

b) After you have deleted the OfficePID.plist file, put the Finder back the
way it was. Open Terminal again, and:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE

killall Finder

Hope this helps
