Is there a way to "Protect" the contents of a project file so that only the
"owner" can make changes to it. Otherwise, i'd like it to be read only for
everyone else..

David,
It is possible:
File / Save As... / Click the Tools button / General Options...
You can set 2 passwords : one for Read/Write and the other for Write Only

Hi David,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Try File/Save As... and in Project 2007, at the bottom of the dialog, click
the Tools button/General Options and select read-only recommended. If you
apply a password it will be needed to open it even in read-only. If someone
then changes anything, they can then save it with a new name but the
original will be preserved. Try out the various combinations on a test
project file.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

I have a problem with the password protection in a 2000 line 07 MS project
file. "Write Reservation Password" is what I'm using in order to get the
option to open either as read only or with a password (to make official
changes). I'm able to open with the password but when I click to open as read
only, I get the below error message:

"The operation cannot be completed because the source file contains invalid
project data or the total number of rows would exceed the limit of 1,048,000
rows in a project. Validate the data in the source file, insert fewer rows,
delete some rows, or consider dividing your project into subprojects to
provide more space for tasks and resources."

I also notice when I "save as" specifically to test different password
options, the file size reduces by 1 - 2MB. Any advice would be appreciated -
Thanks!

Hello Michelle,

What service pack is installed with Project 2007? There were
several reports of problems with password protected files and I
believe several of those were fixed with service pack 1. I also
encourage you to install the infrastructure update that was released
in July 2008.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
