No, I didn't forget my password. I'm just reinstalling a new O/S and my
entire system. I moved my OneNote files to another drive but now they won't
open with what I know to be my password even when I copy the files back to my
main drive.

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening and what I can do to correct
the situation?

Thanks, these files are essential.

The passwords are stored in the file so as long as your files are the same
and haven't been corrupted this should just work.

There are password cracking programs out there, which you could try but it
might take a long time to crack your password.

Yes, Daniel, Yes, it should. But then I wouldn't have found this great
resource. And unfortunately, the password is 6 characters, Alpha-numeric.
Do you know of any code cracking programs that can handle that?

But thanks for taking a crack at it. What would really be helpful is a
program that could read the encryption in the file instead of random trial
and error. The key has to be applied somehow in order to determine if a
given set of characters one types in the box are correct or not. Yes?

Thanks again,

Dennis

Storing the key would defeat the purpose of encryption, as everyone
would be attacking the key directly. My bet is that ON uses the key you
type to decrypt a certain small piece of the file. If the decrypted
piece looks like a valid piece of information should look like, ON
assumes that you have entered the correct key. So the key is never
stored itself.

Do you really want that something like that would exist?

I for one would not like that at all.
What would encryption be good for if everybody could get access?

Are you able to create new password protected sections? Try making a new
section, then set a password, lock the section, and unlock it. Does that
work? If no, then it's most likely that the cryptographic services in
the OS got messed up somehow.
If you can create new password protected sections, then the problem is
likely somewhere within OneNote. Are you using OneNote 2003 or 2007
beta? What is the error message that you get? Does it say incorrect
password, or something else?
