paste a picture as a thumbnail in a table?

I would like to prepare a table in which sets of pictures were displayed
against particular dates with comments. It would be useful if I could paste
the typical thumbnail view of a file into the table but I can't see how to
do this: only the full picture, which can be dragged to a smaller apparent
size, but would presumably still take up the same file space as the full
picture. How best to proceed? Any suggestions?

Kind regards,

Table > Table Properties, on the Cell tab click on Options, check Fit text.
You may also want to Center the contents of the cell.

This will give you the thumbnail appearance, but I'm not sure it is going to
reduce the file size.

Thanks for the suggestion SVC, but this does not seem to make any
difference: pictures pasted in still push the table down and off the screen
(though fixing the column width stops it going off the side). Various paste
special options seem to make little difference either - pasting as an icon
just gives the Word symbol, not the thumbnail.

Seems I want some sort of combination of a Windows Explorer window and a
Word Table - which I can probably approximate in one of the photohandling
packages that seem to accumulate on the PC but I never had a use for before
because Windows seemed to cater for it all! (For the time being I used
Photoshop Elements to reduce a batch of pics all together, but I would have
preferred not to have had to the rename them all!)
