PASTE FUNCTION DIMMED OUT ver 2000

i am baffled beyond belief.
one time this was not a problem
but NOW .. if i select a block to copy
when i place the cursor where i want the data pasted
the PASTE and PASTE SPECIAL menu options are dimmed out..


i can't understand why this is happening

I REALLY NEED HELP as i can't work like this

PS I CAN COPY AND PASTE ONE CELL IF I COPY FROM
THE STATUS LINE , NOT DIRECTLY FROM THE CELL.
