paste link paragraph from one doc to another

I am surprised I haven't been able to locate any past discussions o
this item. Maybe I am not using the right keywords for the search.
Anyway, what I want to do is:

Copy acontiguous portion of text from one Microsoft Word 200
document and paste link it into another Microsoft Word 2003 document.

Where I am so far is I can copy and I can paste link. But, I can no
get the items pasted to update either manually, automatically, or when
re-open the document with the pasted information.

If I right mouse click on the object inside the word document I paste
into I get an option to update the link. However, when I select it,
get the error "Objects in this document contain links to files tha
cannot be found. The linked information will not updated."

There is also a "Linked Document Object" option listed when I righ
mouse click on the object. That gives me a "Links" option. Whe
chosen, a Links dialog box opens. My link is listed in the dialog box.
If I switch it to manual from automatic update, and then click on th
"Update Now" button, the portion of the document that I paste linke
changes to become the whole word document from the source instead o
just the portion I wanted.

I am beginning to think what I want to do is just not possible, bu
does anyone have any ideas? Is there a way to declare a portion of tex
in the source word document as an object and then link to that object
