Paste Options button

Can anyone tell me why sometimes the Paste Options button sometimes appears, and sometimes doesn't? I mean that little window that appears (albeit only sometimes) when one pastes a bit of text from one document to another, which allows you to indicate if you want the formatting to remain the same as the original, or adopt that of the new document.

Can you track down the "sometimes"? It's pretty consistent here. Also,
what version of Word?

It should appear everytime you use cmd-V or Edit | Paste.

If you use Edit | Paste Special (or a script/macro that uses a paste
special function), it will not appear.

If you are pasting from a clipboard utility, I'm not sure it appears.

It won't appear if what you paste is in exactly the same format as the
destination, or if the pasted material has formatting that cannot be applied
at the destination.

In other words, it's semi-smart ‹ it won't appear if it can't do anything.

Cheers

In response to Daiya's opinion, the activity (lack thereof) is apparently random. For instance, I am presently working between two documents, each with different sized fonts. When I cut from one to the other, the window appears only sometimes. I suppose this also calls into question John McGhie's opinion, since the formatting is different between documents, and the only difference between the two is the font size, so I would not suppose this is an issue of a format that can't be applied.

It certainly does :)

The mechanism swings on the "format on the clipboard", which clouds the
issue a little.

But in your circumstances, it certainly sounds like something is not working
right.

Yours is the first report we have seen of this not working.

What is the style name of the text in the source and destination? What
settings do you have in Word>Preferences>Edit>Cut and Paste
Options>Settings?

Hope this helps
