'Paste' sometimes 'Sends'

S

Steve B.

Sometimes when I hit CMD + V to paste text into the body of an email,
Entourage sends the message I'm working on. This doesn't happen often -
sometimes I don't see it for weeks - but it's been ongoing for a long time
and has led to me posting incomplete messages to newsgroups, among other
small disasters.

IS this a known issue, or is it just me?

Thanks in advance,
Steve = : ^ )

I think it's you, not Entourage.

Cmd-return is the Post Message Right NOW! command. I also accidentally hit
those keys occasionally, sometimes when trying to paste text. But often
enough I can tell that my fingers wigged out and that it was me.

Yeah, it sucks. Wish I could disable that keyboard shortcut.

Hmm, maybe I could use the OS full keyboard access to assign it to something
else?

maybe you could but 'Return' is a long way form 'V' and I'm _definitely_
hitting CMD-V and not CMD-Return.

Is it possible that imeddiately following a CMD-V (Paste), the next step you
take is to hit a Return or two, to put some space between the recently
pasted text and your additions to it? If so, then it is possible that there
is some lag on your part in lifting your finger off of the CMD key.

cmd-Enter does the same. On a laptop, Enter is right next to the right=side
cmd key and you could easily be pressing both at once with the same finger.
Are you on a laptop?

I'm on a G4 Tower, not laptop, and, once in a blue moon, pressing CMD-V
immediately sends the message, before I've had the chance to press any other
key, 'return' included. 'Enter' is on the number keypad, along way from 'V'.

You're not crazy. This has happened to me more than once. Luckily so
far nothing really embarrassing was sent before I intended it to be!

You're also right, this is once in a blue moon. The answer that was
given seems to make some sense, maybe we are hitting cmd-v and then
hitting return to makes space after the paste without letting up on the
command key fully. but i don't THINK so.

sounds to me like the solution is to get rid of the send now keyboard
shortcut somehow.

That would certainly prove whether it's us or Entourage. I tried to assign
the keys to a different command in the System Prefs, but it wouldn't let me
actually enter anything in the box for the command shortcut. :( But I've
never done it before, so not sure I was doing it right.

Yay! I don't mean to rejoice in your misfortune, just that I'm glad it's not
just me.

I'm _sure_ that the 'send' happens _immediately_ upon pasting.

You could perhaps reassign it with something like iKey, but that may not be
the problem. If I remember, I insert a deliberate typo at the start of my
message and, with spell-checking enabled, this brings up a dialogue, which I
can escape, before actually sending.

This thread seems to have dried up. It seems that there are precisely _two_
people on this list (in the world?) with this problem, and I'm one of them.

To those who suggested it was user error: it's only 'paste' that behaves
this way. 'Cut' and 'Copy', both of which also get some usage when composing
emails, *never* 'Send'. It's only 'Paste' that behaves this way.

So, no other suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Glad you brought this up again Steve.

I have encountered the same problem, but fortunately, in approximately three
years of daily Entourage use, only about eight times. It was embarrassing
almost in each instance!

For a while I safeguarded myself by omitting or delete the recipient ...
until I was truly ready to send.

I began to think perhaps I'd accidentally pressed a neighboring keystroke
(command-B or command-G) that was an undocumented method for sending
messages. Testing showed that these keystrokes have no such effect.

Is there a way to disable the Command-return keystroke? That would solve the
problem of "hitting cmd-v and then hitting return after the paste without
letting up on the command key fully."

Fortunately I haven't see the little pest in over a year.

Using 10.1.1. I'm wondering if the problem went away with my last upgrade
....

Remember ResEdit? I loved that tool because it would allow you to make
modifications like that. Is ResEdit still around? Is there something
similar?

Yay! There are more than two of us. Yes I see it *very* infrequently, but it
has been embarrassing.

I'm don't think it comes from hitting 'return' after a paste. In my
experience, CMD-V causes the message to be sent _immediately_, so deleting
the CMD-Return keystroke may nor fix it.

I'm pretty sure you could re-assign CMD-Return to something else with iKey.

Steve,

You are not alone, my friend. I have had this happen more than once. I
thought I hit a key that closed the window because when I hit paste, the
window was gone. Only later did I realize that I actually sent a rather
embarrassing message.

I can't explain HOW it works, but it has happened to me too. :)

It just happened again! I was drafting an email, copied something, hit
"Paste" and the message _immediately_ disappeared. I checked the sent items
and, sure enough, it had been sent and I can report that the 'paste' didn't
happen before the send. So it's *definitely not* that we're hitting CMD-V
and then Return (I was nowhere near the Return key) - the Send happens
*instead of* the Paste.

Do none of you Microsoft boffins have _any_ ideas here??

Who knows?! I believe you because I've seen it. However, I can't seem to
duplicate it "on demand". <shrug>

If someone could figure out how to disable the cmd-return shortcut, and it
still happened, that would be enough proof.

Proof of what exactly? I can verify that CMD-V sometimes 'Sends' the message
instead of 'Pasting' the clipboard. However, I can't make it happen on
demand.
